90th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

BULLETIN - LIST OF EVENTS

In the summer of 2004, the Armenian Community & Church Council of Great Britain together with the Primate of the Armenian Church of the United Kingdom, invited all Armenian organisations to a meeting, and with the co-operation of the Armenian Embassy and Campaign for Recognition of the Armenian Genocide (CRAG), established the "COMMITTEE FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 90th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE". The principal objective of the Committee being for the community's organisations to jointly organise a series of events throughout 2005 to commemorate the 90th anniversary and to maximise public awareness regarding the historical and legal truths of the Genocide.

Whilst the committee recognises the ultimate goal is to obtain official recognition by the Government in the UK, it also realises that recognition will not be forthcoming without the support of political establishments, the Foreign Office, as well as traditional broadcasting/media organisations and endorsement from high profile historians. It therefore becomes essential to lobby for support and secure allies from the broader political spectrum. The focus should remain on ending Denial and gaining recognition at local authority level or City Councils across the UK. Gwynedd County Council set the example in 2004 by unanimously supporting the resolution for recognising the events of 1915 as Genocide. The first step has been taken, the responsibility is upon every British Armenian, to lead by example and encourage the lobbying work in progress.

The Committee calls upon the whole UK Armenian community to play an active role in this commemorative year and to unite as a single voice to ensure the activities of this year do not fall on deaf ears. The committee has focused on achievable targets and the programme will be implemented by utilising the community’s resources.

Please note the schedule of events below. We ask that you make a conscious effort to participate. The cooperation and support of all Armenians, organisations and particularly schools will be greatly appreciated.
