To the House of Commons.
The Petition of people of the United Kingdom,
Declares that April 24th 2005 marks the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Government of the Ottoman Empire (as British Archives denote); further declares that though the present Government of Turkey bears no responsibility for the crimes committed by its predecessor, its policy of genocide denial is an offensive and cruel affront to the Armenian community of the British Isles; to Turkish citizens who are being deprived of their right to free speech through threat of legal sanction; to victims of all genocide and crimes against humanity who may one day share this fate of denigration and belittlement; and to history itself which faces at this time a sustained and calculated assault.
The Petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons pass a resolution condemning all acts of genocide denial, and recognising as genocide the killing of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turkey in 1915.
And the Petitioners remain, etc.
