House of Commons - New Motion Submitted by Jeremy Corbyn, Islington North Labour MP - 30 April 2004
Submitted as a new Early Day Motion (EDM) entitled 'ARMENIA' on 30 April 2004.
EDM 1104 states: "That this House recognises that the extermination of over a million Armenians in 1915 was an act of genocide; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to recognise it as such and for the government of Turkey to do the same; and expresses its condolences to the descendants of those who were so brutally murdered at that time."
To date, this EDM has garnered 34 signatures from different MP's. Many more signatures from other MP's are necessary to make any noticeable difference.
Many more signatures from MP's are needed to outdo the 61 signatures obtained last year. Although this EDM would not have any enforceable or binding legislative authority, it would be a persuasive argument toward the levels of support for recognition of the Armenian Genocide in England. As you may well recall, CRAG led a concerted campaign last year, and used a format / text / letter that was addressed by Armenians AND non-Armenians IN THE UK to their own constituency MP's urging them to sign the EDM.
Having just commemorated the 89th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and having heard Peter Balakian,Tigran Sarukhanyan and others talk about the reality of this genocide, CRAG wish to do the same thing again this year.
